Western snacks become part of nightlife

People in Beijing are no longer following the "early to bed, early to
rise" living habit. More people go out for entertainment in the evening
and their appetite at night is just as great as during the day.

In the past, when people wanted to go somewhere in the evening, they
usually picked the Guijie street in Beijing. Everybody there liked to eat
a delicious snack food, the hot and spicy small lobster. At other times,
they might choose to go to the Jindingxuan Restaurant to have Chinese
snack foods, or go to the Yonghe Soybean Milk Fast Food Restaurant to
drink a cup of soybean milk. Today, they have more choices. Whenever they
feel hungry, they can go to the nearest Macdonald outlet to order a cup
of hot coffee and a Big Mac.

Just before the World Cup period, one-fourth of the 90 Macdonald outlets
in Beijing had started to keep their shops open round the clock.
According to the Macdonald's branch company in Beijing, the decision was
made based on customer needs and most outlets that ran the 24-hour
business were located in Wangfujing Street or Dongzhimen district, where
the nightlife entertainments were lively.

Macdonald's new business in Beijing is actually a very traditional
business mode for the company. Some local restaurant owners in Beijing
are worried lest this business be bad news to the local catering
industry. Over the past several months, some local restaurants, which had
traditionally run the round-the-clock catering business in Beijing for a
long time, did show that they could not compete with Macdonald's in
management.

However, one thing for sure is that the nightlife business market has
become bigger in Beijing now. In the past, visitors to Beijing said they
could only see some temples during the day and had nothing to do but
sleep at night. In recent years, however, streets like Sanlitun and
Houhai have become famous for their colorful nightlife entertainment
activities.

Still, nightlife in Beijing cannot be described as "colorful enough," for
people spend most of their money only on some drinks for their nightlife
activities. There aren't many cultural or leisure activities for people
to choose from. From time to time, some cultural parties will be held at
the China Art Gallery, the Dashanzi Art Community Center and the Houhai
No.47 Art Gallery. These activities attract only a small number of people
to go there during the night. Recently, a French art consultant commented
that the nightlife in Beijing was more like Paris in that it was now full
of cultural atmosphere.
