Shakespeare with a Korean Twist

Korea's famous Sadari Movement Laboratory brings a dynamic piece of theatrical drama to Beijing with their stripped-down interpretation of Georg Buchner's Woyzeck at the Chaoyang Nine Theaters from July 9 to 11.

The play is based on the true story of a poor German soldier, who was driven to madness by inhuman military murders and discipline.

Founded in 1999, Sadari is one of Korea's best-known young theater companies. The production has been invited to tour all over the world and was a sold-out success at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it won the Herald Angel and Total Theatre Award.

Korean Week will wrap up with Theater Moollee's Lady Macbeth at the Oriental Avant-garde Theater from July 11 to 13. This experimental Lady Macbeth is a thorough rewrite of Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Theater Moollee, founded by director and playwright Tae-Sook Han in 1997, is an experimental theater group. It is known within the international theatre community for its controversial works.

Q: When to use emergency phone numbers 110, 119, and 122

A: 110 is for emergency services, while 119 is for the fire department and 122 for traffic accident reports. These three 24-hour lines are all access routes to the public security organ, receiving public emergency calls.

When life or property is threatened, or there occurs an urgent and sudden event that the public is unable to settle, 110 should be called to raise the alarm and seek help. If a fire has started, 119 should be called, and if a traffic accident happens, 122 should be called, allowing the public
security organ to dispatch special personnel to the site in time.

After being put through 110, you will firstly hear such a prompt in both Chinese and English: "Hello, here is 110 alarm service", then an operator will hear your case. Please answer the questions according to the requirements of the operator, such as your name, position and contact ways and so on
as well as the basic information of the relevant case. Generally, you should remain at the position where you give the alarm to wait for policemen and meet them as soon as they arrive. Please keep the site untouched so that the policemen can acquire evidence at the site. If you dial 110 by
mistake, please hang up immediately.

At that time, the Big Apple took Paris’s place as the world’s art capital. Late-modernism dominated high art during the period between 1950 to the beginning of 1970s. The unconventional Pop Art style, although widely exhibited, seldom won applause from mainstream Rauschenberg and Edward
Kienholz were also considered Pop artists. Using the magic wand of Pop Art, New Dada artists pushed the boundaries of art appreciation and found new sources of inspiration of artistic creation. The Pop artists of the 1960s elevated the “low” arts of the mass to a much-revered status with the
help of mass communication, and the leader of this Pop Art movement was the master, Andy Warhol.

"Chubby Women" Exhibited in Paris

The solo exhibition of China’s famous sculptor Xu Hongfei opened in Paris on February 18, 2008. The exhibition will last for one month. The exhibit includes 26 pieces of the recent “Chubby Women” sculpture series by Xu Hongfei.

Before Xu left for Paris, Huang Yongyu, the Chinese painting guru, wrote an interesting forward for the coming exhibition: “People say women are like the sun to men, and now Xu Hongfei is leaving for Paris with his chubby suns.”

Riding bicycles, scratching itch, walking with a dog, strolling in a breeze… the 26 chubby women Xu sculpted are all charming and varied in stance, and are attracting large audiences. One of the largest works Embracing Breeze, two meters wide and one meter high, features a sculpted woman riding
a real bicycle.

Xu Hongfei was born in Guangdong in 1963 and graduated from the Quangzhou Art Institute with a major in Sculpture in 1990. He is currently the Vice chancellor of Guangzhou Sculpture institute.

Xu Hongfei believes that “art should be fun and amusing.” He combined traditional and contemporary spirit into a new series of sculptures with “Chubby Women.” He believes each person has the right to enjoy one’s body and be self-confident. Xu enjoys expressing the beauty and suppleness
of fat and admires the energy of weight.

Chinese Ancient Statues, Artifacts on Show in Florence

The show ends with recently discovered frescoes and paintings including a mural depicting a fiery central Asian horse found in the tomb of Wei, one of the wives of the Emperor Taizong (599-649 AD).

The exhibition, "China, at The Court Of The Emperors, Never-Before-Seen Masterpieces From Han Tradition To Tang Elegance(25-907 AD)," runs until June 8.

One 83-member performing arts group has already toured Toronto, Canada and New York, United States on February 5, and 8-9, delivering the grand dance opera: A Dream of Red Mansions, adapted from the classic Chinese novel.

Leading the Way out of Today's Labyrinth

Ancient Greek labyrinths were complex structures, from which there was almost no escape. Yet according to legend, Theseus and Ariadne managed to find a way out using a simple thread.Using this story as a metaphor to explain their work, 31 Greek artists have come to China share and exchange images
and ideas.

Their story is told in Labyrinths, a show that aspires to bring together two ancient civilizations through contemporary art.

The exhibition includes comics, illustrations and graphic design, street art, sculptural installations and video installations, portraying significant aspects of Greek contemporary art.

"Beijing and Athens are all ancient cities, which have splendid culture and history. They surprise you, confuse you and charm you, just like labyrinths," says Niki Tzouda, one of the curators of the exhibition.

At the opening this month, five artists gave painting performances at 798 Art Space in Beijing where the exhibition is running until February 15.

Graffiti artist Stelios Faitakis, one of the five, drew mountains and trees in Chinese ink and wash landscape painting style. "Now that I am here in China, I want to put some Chinese elements in the exhibition," he says.

Born in Athens, Faitakis fell into art after high school. A somewhat withdrawn child, he found the idea of studying art as thrilling as his parents found it unwise.

He was involved in numerous public wall painting projects during his studies, including the surrounding walls of the "Elais" factory in Athens, August 2003.

The Imperial Painting Academy

Imperial painting academies were first established in theFive Dynasties. They were under the direct administration of the imperial government. Painters of the academies enjoyed the same treatment as literary officials in courts, wore official suits, and received salaries from the imperial
government. The academies gathered the most excellent painters in the country. Their tasks were to draw portraits for the nobles, and when important social events occurred, they were required to record them in paintings. These activities helped to improve the skills of the painters. Well-known
painters during this period include the flower and bird painters, Huang Quan and Huang Jucai of the Shu State (908-925) and the portrait painters Cao Zhongxuan, Zhou Wenju and Gu Hong of the Southern Tang State (947-958). They were responsible for great artistic achievements and strongly
influenced their successors.

The Song Dynasty united China again in 960 and expanded the imperial painting academy. All the great painters from the Five Dynasties applied for posts in the Song Dynasty Imperial Painting Academy, and it became the creative center of painting of the time. The abbot of the Zhaoying Palace of the
YuqingTempleselected painters to draw murals on the palace wall; over 3,000 painters came for the selection examination and about 100 were chosen, including Wu Zongyuan, whose works were considered as good asWu Daozi's. Zhang Zeduan, painter of theQingming Festival by the Riverside, also served in
the Imperial Painting Academy.

The Imperial Painting Academy reached its peak of development in the period from Emperor Huizong's reign to Emperor Xiaozong's reign of theSouthern Song Dynasty(1127-1279). The entry examination for the painting academy was included in the imperial civil service examination system.

The painting examination contained six subjects, including drawing pictures based on ancient poems. Some painters chose unique angles to reveal the meaning of the poems. For example, in drawing the concept for the line "No body comes across the wild river, A single boat stays on the river", one
painter portrayed a boatman asleep at one end of the boat with a flute beside him, indicating he had had no customers the whole day and felt very tired. In another examination, for the line "An ancient temple hides in the deep mountain", a painter drew a young monk fetching water from a stream.

Chinese Traditional Kite Craft

Kites were invented by the Chinese people over 2000 years ago. About in the 12th century, Chinese kite spread to the West, and the oriental and Western kite culture was formed after years of development. In this process, Chinese traditional culture integrated with the kite craft, and finally
formed the kite culture with unique characteristics.

Uses of kite have been changed several times in history. According to historical record, kite was first used in military. In the mid Tang Dynasty (618-907), in which the society was stable and peaceful, the use of kites was gradually changed from military to entertainment. With the innovation of
papermaking, the raw material of kite changed from silk to paper. Kite became popular among civilians with a richer variety of forms and reached the peak point in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Participated by the literary, the making and the decoration of kites underwent great development. Kite
making became a profession due to the large demand.

The Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties, was the peak period of the Chinese kite. The kites underwent great development in size, design, decoration and flying skills. Literators at that time made kite by themselves, and sent to relatives and friends as a gift, regarding it a literary pursuit. In
resent years, kite flying has publicized as a sports activity as well as entertainment.

Workmanship of Chinese kites

The workmanship of Chinese kites can be summarized in four points: structuring, paperhanging, color drawing, and flying.

Structuring includes: selecting bamboo, chopping bamboo, bending bamboo, and joining bamboo.

Paperhanging includes: selecting material, cutting out, paperhanging, and cutting away or adding material as needed.

Color drawing includes: composing picture, outlining, dyeing (or coloring), and decorating.

Flying includes: selecting site and weather, choosing the kite, launching the kite into the air, adjusting the line, and controlling the kite.

To make a kite, first, the right kind of bamboo strips must be selected for the frame. It should be thick and strong for a kite of large dimensions in order to stand the wind pressure. The regular paper or sometime silk is used to cover the frame. Silk kites, especially, are more durable and
generally of higher artistic value. Third, painting the kite may be done in each way.

China has a large area of territory. As a traditional culture and folk art, kite has formed unique style of different regions during its development, among which the most famous ones are the styles of Beijing, Tianjin, Weifang in Shangdong Province, Sichuan and Guangdong Province .

Art genre & characteristics of Chinese kites

The art of Chinese kites has developed endlessly alongside the long history of the nation's cultural traditions. Each kind of kite art has its strong point due to its strong affinity with each rich and colorful historical period. The specific kite art and firmly relates with the music, dance,
drama, folk-custom, and religion of their respective areas.

In the piece above, hai3 doesn't even rise, it only dips. In actual speech, most third tones are
like that ('half third tones'). Second tones, on the other hand, are always rising.

Hello all, new to the board but having been reading through all the information on here over the
last few days. However I'm still curious about a few things.

My girlfriend and I are looking to move to China to teach English for at least a year. We both
lived in Japan for a year teaching and loved it but we've got bored back home.

She has a BA in Biology so from what I can understand, she'll have no bother finding a job. I only
have a HNC (Higher National Certificate) in photography. Will this be a problem when trying to
find a job?

I have taught over a thousand lessons one to one in Japan (on a working holiday visa) so I imagine
this would help me a great deal.

Also, we're looking into living in Tianjin as one of my girlfriends colleagues is from there. Good
idea?

Finally, is there much demand for couples to teach at University's and Colleges or does it make no
difference.

The HNC might be OK at some schools who don't know the intricacies of the UK system. Just having a
fancy bit of paper with the college name on it might work. However, my school wouldn't do it. The
system here is being tightened up.

If in doubt about your qualifications, do a TEFL course or similar. This will be accepted without
any problems and one takes a few weeks to complete. In fact there are even online ones that you
can do at home. If you get a TEFL, with your past experience, it's shouldn't be hard to find a
school in China who will employ both of you. Last year we had a young American couple at our
school who did exactly what you want to do. The man had a degree and the woman had only a TEFL
cert.

I did do a one week intensive TEFL course at my local Uni before I went to Japan so I'm hoping
that should be enough.

I can't comment about Tianjin but from my experience in Beijing, if you want to teach at the
university level (esp at a first tier university), you need a BA and some sort of TESOL
certification. The competition is fierce in Beijing and the gov't is tightening up.

But anything is possible in China, esp at the 2nd/ 3rd tier universities and colleges.

2. There is a limited demand for teachers of English in Tianjin, but there is a better chance in
TEDA close nearby (Tianjin Development Area)

Try applying to Berlitz Beijing. They take potential native English-speaking teachers and give
them training in the Berlitz Methodology, and they have several projects with major corporations
in TEDA. But contact them only when you get to China. Then send your CV

I am trying to find a rather comprehensive source of words to describe movies, books and tv shows
- words like romance, horror, adventure, sci fi, etc. I have googled and found some sits but they
were lacking considerably. There also was some contradiction in the words they used, so I just
tossed the sites and moved on.

I wouldn't throw out those sources just because of a few contradictions. Those contradictions may
reflect actual usage. For example, fantasy books are often listed as science fiction in English.
Of course it's better to use the word "fantasy", but it's useful to know that fact.

You might find browsing Douban helpful. The tags are all user generated so they can be a bit
messy. Example: 另类, 前卫.

Incidentally, the Last Temptation of Christ is listed on Verycd under disaster movies. Which in a
way, I suppose, it was.

So I am currently working with "A New Text for a Modern China", but as a self-study student since
I don't have access to a Chinese teacher. I have a question about a sentence I came upon and was
hoping I might get some help.

Here is the sentence fragment:
但是傳統的婚姻觀念還存在,找對象時還必須看對方的社會的位,...

How would I roughly translate this sentence? Especially this part:
找對象時還必須看對方的社會的位 ? Does it mean something like "When looking for a
partner one still must look at the other's social status...."

And I also came across another phrase in another reading sample given below which is supposed to
an add from a guy looking for a companion I believe:

希望找一位家住本市，會社交，能作秘書工作，長得較好，具有高中以上文�
��水平，二十四至三十歲的未婚姑娘為伴侶．

If I understand this correctly, basically the guy is looking for a girl from a family in his city,
and she should be capable of doing "PR", handling secretarial work, 長得較好, she should have
at least a secondary school education, and be an unmarried girl between the ages of 24 and 30 for
companionship.

I could not understand 長得較好. What does it mean?

First it should be 地位 not 的位 but you have understood the sentence correctly. Traditional
society 讲门第，要门当户对.

Second 长得较好 means the person 长得比较好 so they are decent looking. 长得 refers to
how the person has "grown up". Sorry i know that sounds funny but not quite sure how to express it
in proper english.

“長得較好” means “good looking”.I think it is more usually used in spoken Chinese than
in written Chinese. so in this case, “長相較好” should be better.

長得牛高馬大

Sorry OracleBone, “長相較好” is an awkward use of Chinese here -- After being told
multiple times that my use of English was awkward by my English teachers, I finally got a chance
to say the same to someone regarding the use of Chinese. Hee hee!

Also, 长得 is more like "being born with" as in the sentence, "some one was born with better
looks".

"長得較好"The expression is really strange and unusually both in spoken Chinese and in written
Chinese.it's better to use "容貌佼好(rong2mao4jiao3hao3)" to describe a women is good-looking
in written Chinese. but it's just one of the thousand expressions in Chinese to describe a women's
looking. In spoken chinese.,We usually to say "这是个美女" or "这个女孩很漂亮".

I would use the phrase "相貌好" in the ad and forget about the word "較".

In the near future I will be heading to Japan on business quite regularly. Knowing how much easier
it is to get around being able to speak the language, would like to start studying Japanese. In
the town where I live there are a significant amount of Japanese businesses so as a consequence
there are a lot of Chinese people who speak Japanese here and a lot of people trained as japanese
teachers.

Was thinking it might be interesting to study Japanese using Chinese as my base language rather
than English, ie the the teacher will be Chinese and she will use Chinese to teach me. (I am a
native english speaker who speaks Mandarin).

Has anyone done it this way?

Will learning japanese affect my chinese in anyway? Anyone found any problems with learning
another language on top of Chinese?

Anyone have any recommendations for text books etc?

the textbook we use is 初级日本语总主编：赵华敏北京大学出版社

the text book is easy and with detail explanation about the word and grammar( in Chinese)
For the pronunciation,it has a CD . you can practise it by yourself.
For beginer , i recommend you to use this one .

And there is a very poplular text book called: 标准日本语
there are many materials about learning this text book, including mp3, video...

Yes. The two Japanese teachers (they are both Chinese people) I know complain that they sometimes
write the Japanese character when they’re writing Chinese, and write Chinese when writing
Japanese. Because so many Japanese Kanji are similar (sometimes even identical) to their Chinese
counterpart, even professional people are easy to get confused.

So long as you have good Mandarin, it probably won't matter which language you use as the medium
of instruction. I would strongly recommend against being taught by a Chinese teacher though - in
general they have notoriously bad pronunciation and their grasp of Japanese grammar is usually not
so hot (think of your average Japanese speaking English). You would be much better off trying to
find a Japanese woman who has accompanied her husband to China and has learnt Mandarin, of which
there should be no shortage. If you're lucky, they may even have a qualification from Japan to
teach Japanese to foreigners (a popular thing for housewives to get before going overseas).

As for Japanese affecting your Chinese, it is only likely to happen to the extent that
studentyoung has mentioned - you'll probably start confusing almost identical characters (e.g. C.
德 vs J. 徳). But no-one is likely to notice.

It's hard to explain but a quick "translation" in my mind would render 对于 as "in regards to"
or "as it concerns" and 关于 as "about"

He read a book about politics
他读了一本关于政治的书

He has a lot of thoughts regarding politics
他对于政治有很看法

Best way probably to really get familiar with the difference is to read a lot of examples because
it is a bit hard to explain outright but the usage is very obvious.

This is not entirely true gentle-fly because many of those words in English are interchangeable
when it comes to the Chinese usage and especially in your 对于 definitions they just don't work.

对于这次活动大家议论纷纷
Towards/To/For this activity??? No it doesn't work. We would say regarding or about this... even
in my first examples technically they can be interchanged. I chose regards and about as they seem
to have a little bit more of differentiate between the two despite their similarity.

Hello all,
I'm writing because I'm trying to gauge my progress so far, and estimate how much more I need to
study. I began studying Chinese about 6 months ago, being inspired in large part by 三国演义
and a very sincere desire to become more engaged with Chinese history and culture.

Since then, I've worked up to the end of Defrancis' "Intermediate Chinese Reader Part II", which
uses traditional characters. I can probably recognize around 800 characters, and maybe 3-4K words.
I'm a fairly quick learner....

Can anybody on the forum give me an idea of how many characters I would need to know to read
三國演義 either in the original chinese, or in a modern chinese translation? Obviously I
understand that some knowledge of 文言文 would be required. About how much longer might I need
to study at the rate I'm going?

It's said you need about 3000 characters (and know the words they combine into) to read the
newspaper, so for the Sanguo Yanyi, I'd estimate at least 4-5000 characters. More important, as
you know, are the words that are formed with these characters. And, as you have understood, some
knowledge of wenyanwen.

I'd say that it would take you at least 3 years of intensive study, but quite possibly a lot
longer. Not sure how hard the SGYY is, but after three years I still had trouble with Shanghai
Baby.

Funny that you ask, that's the book I'm reading right now. I'm up to the 26th chapter.

三国演义 is a great book: a mixture of history, strategy, and war. The thing is, the plot is
never dull, and the book feels a lot like a Hollywood action movie.

As far as language, I agree with Lu that it would probably take a few years to get to the point
where you could read it without too many troubles. Although, it sounds like you are making good
pace, it would still take a lot of studying. The book is a mix of 文言文 and modern 白话,
epecially in the dialogues. That means you need to have (at least a little) base in classical
Chinese, and you should more or less understand modern Mandarin. For the former requirement, you
probably need to work through a classical Chinese book (maybe in college or something). For the
latter requirement, it is best to have book textbook knowledge, mixed with a lot of listening
practice and speaking practice. It would also be best if you had the experience of reading some
other easier books first.

On the other hand, you can buy simplified forms of the book (usually made for young kids, maybe
ages 6-9) that capture the essence of the original. These books use a simplified vocabulary, and
they abridge the story and the amount of characters. They might be 200 pages or so.

Also, certain editions of the real book are much better than others. The first time I tried to
read the book, I just bought a normal edition that only had story, no value added features. Then,
a few months later, I was looking around in the bookstore and found a much better edition. The one
I have now (新课标语文必读书: 三国演义，长春出版社） will often give the pinyin
and tones for rare characters, and will often give the meaning for certain words, or the meaning
of a strange refrence or something like that. So, you can read through it with a lot less
problems. There are dozens and dozens of editions out there, so it is worth the time to find one
that helps you understand the novel in a more comprhensive way.

Anyway, keep working at it!

I've never managed to finish more than 11 chapters of the book (I read the original). Language is
not a problem, but the story is ... I think I simply don't like the story enough to finish it ...

But, skylee, that's right about where the plot gets going!

The first few chapters, with the whole Dong Zhuo thing, really isn't that interesting. But once
the chaos starts and they all have to make alliances and war a lot, I think it gets a lot better.
You also start to see the personalities of the characters a lot better, compared to the first
part, in which it feels like you have to remember 100 characters that all seem interchangable.

Anyway, I think the book is generally more popular with males, if I had to generalize. So far,
there aren't really any characters that women could relate to, except for maybe Diao Chan, but her
role is also fairly limited. I don't know.

I've been reading San Guo for the past 6 months, haven't even gotten 1/3 of the way into it.
Granted that has not been consistent reading, and like Skylee says, it is heavy reading that
sometimes seems to plod on. In regards to reading the 四大名著...

I hate to burst everyone's bubble about reading books like San Guo Yan Yi, Hong Lou Meng, etc, but
if someone says they studied Chinese for two years and then read one of those books they are
either a) spectacularly gifted in Chinese and have spent a significant amount of time on classical
Chinese or b) pulling the wool over your eyes. I would say more like 3 to 4 years, at a minimum,
of intensive Chinese study including classical Chinese to begin to tackle the "Big 4" of Chinese
literature. This isn't to discourage someone who might want to set their sights on reading on of
those books, its just to say people almost always underestimate the proficiency and stamina it
takes to finish one of those books. I know few foreigners who have finished those books, and even
fewer who have grasped all its subtleties. My advice would be to start with a good foundation in
classical Chinese after studying modern Chinese for a few years, then try tackling it.

there's also an audio version of sanguo yanyi. i have it on three mp3 cd's (which means around 40
regular audio cd's). i've only heard random excerpts so far, but i can tell you it's fairly
interesting since it's meant to captivate the attention of young children. however, it's supposed
to be quite expensive and i have no clue as to what the company is called.

I checked out one of those CDs from the library before. The one I heard was told by 蔡康永 and
侯文詠, called 歡樂三國志. It is pretty popular, but I didn't really enjoy it. I think I
would need to get more familiar with the names and the stories before listening to it.

Perhaps you can get a simplified version with less rare words? There are lots of versions around.

of a Chinese font, then it breaks the display of Chinese characters for all GTK apps (not just
SCIM).

When I've got some time, I'm going to try upgrading to a more recent version and see if that fixes
things.

I'm currently in my 3rd year of university mandarin. This next summer (possibly my last summer
before graduating), I was thinking it would be a good idea to spend some time in Beijing and take
language classes to bring up my proficiency.
One general question I have is, Is an 8 week program long enough to really improve my Chinese?
Should I wait until after I graduate and then go for a full semester?
Has anybody done a summer program and noticed a huge difference? or been disappointed at how
little they improved?

My current plan is to do a summer studying in Beijing, then do a 4th year of mandarin at my
university in the USA, and then after graduation possibly going back to China, but to work, not to
focus on studying language.

Sorry if this post's topic is not well defined. But moving on with further questions:
Assuming I do a summer in Beijing, the options I'm considering most right now are IUP, BNU through
University of California, and BNU through Princeton.

I know the basics of the nature of all 3 programs, and I'd really just like feedback on how much
people enjoyed / learned mandarin during their time there.

I attended the Princeton in Beijing program in 2005 and learned a tremendous amount in the 8 week
program. I'm currently back in China at a "regular" university program, and I greatly miss the
quality and efficiency of the PIB program! If money isn't an issue (or you can get financial aid),
I think attending such a program would be a sound investment.

How did you find the "I will only speak Mandarin" oath?
Are the students who do it mostly Princeton students?

No major complaints, really. Sure, there were mornings when I wished we didn't begin at 7.30, and
times when I thought they could spare us some chengyus, but in retrospect we learned a tremendous
amount in 8 weeks. The language pledge worked well, and eating together with the teachers was the
equivalent of several hours of kouyu class. Can't remember exactly, but I'd say about 30% were
Princeton students.

Warning: almost all of this is what I've heard so take it with a grain of salt.

Princeton: Learn a lot, very very intense, like bootcamp, but you don't really leave the dorm (ie.
you pretty much just eat, study, sleep) ,don't meet Chinese people. That being said, everyone I've
talked to has been very positive about it. They did stress how tough it can be at times though.

BNU: A joke, just like normal summer programs at any university in China. No real homework,
teachers are lax, and there are no real actual students around to hang out with. A waste of money.
BTW I'm at BNU and have been for a year now and like it a lot but people definitely told me not to
stay the summer. I went to a university in Dalian, Liaoning Normal University instead (do a search
for it if interested). I had the same opinion with regards to workload, but Dalian was great for
the summer and I made good friends who didn't speak English. So it was beneficial and Dalian's a
great city.

IUP: A complete waste of money now and in a mess orginization-wise. My friend just finished two
years at IUP and she says they lost their long tenured director, the computer software is not up
to date (as it should be), and the teaching quality has plummeted recently (she's a Harvard PHD
student who has been there since 2005, when she raved about how great it was). She was saying how
they give the best teachers to advanced students when the less advanced types need it much more.
The structure looks good though: Intense, lots of 1 on 1 time with teachers, very small classes
(like 3-4 students). But she said it's just not worth the cost. Her suggestion: do CET Harbin or
go to Taiwan and do ICLP or BLI in Beijing (started by ex-IUP staff).

Agree with Jamoldo that Princeton is very intense, and it's true that there isn't much interaction
with Chinese students. However, there is an enormous amount of interaction with the teachers, not
just during the small and individual classes, but also outside of class: lunch with the teachers
at least twice a week, weekend trips etc. (Some of my best 口语classes took place during bus
rides to places outside of Beijing...).
In short, although there is a great deal of character-memorization, there is a great deal of
interaction as well.

referring to BLI in Beijing, is that the same as BLCU?
On the BLCU website it says that it used to be called BLI, but it seems to old to have been set up
by teachers who left IUP.

I just decided to go to Princeton in Beijing rather than ICLP or IUP next summer.
I eliminated IUP because of several online or second-hand accounts I read saying that the teachers
are better at ICLP. For instance, this article comparing IUP and ICLP came to that conclusion.
After that I needed to choose between PiB and ICLP. I chose PiB.
One reason was this this blog post on housing in Taipei. I really recommend this blog to anybody
considering going to ICLP, including the other posts, which are more positive.

I'll point out that the student writing that particular blog was studying at ICLP through a
scholarship program that gave him a specific amount to pay for housing, and he was very reluctant
to pay any more than that scholarship would cover. People who aren't as stingy might not have as
many problems. This is of course is a situation facing all those getting their own housing in
Taipei. I chose to attend a program that provides dorm housing. One less thing to worry about
during my first time in such a strange land.

I'll try and write a blog about my experiences at PiB (hopefully it'll get through the Great
Firewall) and post the link here.

That's funny, I just chose IUP over PiB and ICLP for the summer. Actually, from what I've read,
ICLP probably would have been the best choice for me, but I realized (after sending in my
application fee) that I wouldn't be able to get to Taiwan before the quarter started. I chose IUP
over PiB because A) I heard that there's more of a summer camp feel at PiB and B) IUP has a
smaller class size. I'll also try to post a bit about my experiences.

Some issuesregardng dragding items from the dictionary to a category are still to be found in RC2.

Interestingly, if I add those items to the category manually they all show atrefacts in dispalying

Hi all,

I just came back from a 3 months long stay in Taiwan, and a friend gave me a letter at the
airport, but he wrote it in chinese(traditional). Unfortunately he did not translate it to me ..
Could anyone help me ?

in taiwan, they write with traditional chinese, why did this guy write 机, instead of 機?

I've been told some simplified chinese characters actually existed first as written shorthand,
because a lot of common characters (like 机）are very complicated in traditional. I would think,
though that in letter writing one would be formal and use the complicated version, but I guess not.

Out of laziness. Too many strokes to write 機. There are a few simplified words used instead of
traditional Chinese characters, like 國(国), 會(会), 靈(灵), 豐(丰), 體(体), etc.

disappointed me. I liked the ending, by which I wasn't surprised at all. 徐静蕾 looked horrible
in the film, whom my dad commented as hideous and not supposed to be there as there are just too

As other posters already mentioned, the transition from simplified to traditional characters isn't
so complicated as it seems.

Mainland Chinese used many methods to simplify characters:

- they totally changed the character or left some parts intact: 聼 --> 听, 頭 --> 头, 賣 -->
卖
- changed only one part of character (radical): 見 --> 见, 詩 --> 诗
- replaced one phonetic with another one which sounds the same: 廳 --> 厅

Radicals are always simplified in the same way (言 --> 讠，見 --> 见，食 --> 饣，etc.)

So, with this basic rules in your mind there won't be any problem for you to quickly learn
traditional characters.

Learning the derivations of simplifications can be interesting in itself. 头 and 卖 are examples
of 草书的楷书化 (regular scriptification? of cursive forms), while I think I've read
somewhere that 听 has been used as a 俗字 (non-standard substitute) for 聼 since Song times.

Lu -

The first group is the tricky one, but also the smallest one I think. If you read some traditional
Chinese, you'll soon come across characters like 買 and 這, that look completely unfamiliar yet
come up all the time. Look them up once or twice and you can read them.

The character "聼" is puzzling. IMHO it is wrong as the 王 below the 耳 on the left is missing
and there are 2 unnecessary strokes on top (but such unnecessary strokes are not uncommon in some
fonts for characters such as 場). But it always comes up when I type with windows IME. I was
clearly taught when I was a kid that the character should be written in the order of
耳王十四一心. This is the correct character -> 聽.

I'm probably going to study Putonghua 普通话 at Shandong University 山东大学 in Jinan
济南市 this Christmas and am wondering if the local language or dialect is any different from
that of the official language Putonghua?
By the way, in regards to living costs, how expensive a city is Jinan to live in (not talking
about accomodation but rather the costs of food for six weeks)? Are there any affordable places to
experience local cuisine or 山东菜 for a foreigner (I'm an Australian student).
How much rougly are airfares from Australia to Jinan, just a rough figure in Australian Dollars?

I am a Chinese living in Shanghai. I have to say that there are much difference.
Actually, if people who living in ShanDong say their local language, I can not even understand. We
can only understand each other through Putonghua.

My suggestion is that you should learn Putonghua and do not need to pay much attention to
ShanDong's local language. That's because Putonghua is more widely used in China.

In China's different place has different accent, in somewhere such as Ji-lu, people speak with
very strong local accent, their pronounce is different to Putonghua.
but the gramma and handwriting are absolutly the same.

I don't know how much it helps, but I lived in Qingdao for a couple months. Same province, couple
of hours away, probably similar in terms of development. Food there was relatively inexpensive. I
eventually shopped at the market and cooked my own food, so that was clearly cheaper, but eating
out at a local restaurant, I could get a decent size meal for about 15 kuai. You should expect
standard Mandarin there. Of course, there will be some 山东话, but you'll catch on. I only
noticed a little bit of dialect in Qingdao. For example, for 没问题, it could sound like mo
wenti as opposed to mei wenti.

The countryside can be interesting. I'll always remember the very first time I went to a certain
place in Shandong, and heard the mayor speak Putonghua. For the first 30 seconds or so I thought
he was talking about rabbits (兔子), then I realised he meant investments (投资). At one point
the chairman of the People's Assembly announced she had lost the Party Secretary (书记) -- in
fact, she couldn't find her mobile phone (手机). After you get used to it, it's ok.

中国男子汉 -

Apparently some people have exaggereated the "difference" between Putonghua and Ji-Lu Mandarin.
I've been travelling around China and found that people in the north could understand each other
easily. Of course dialects and accents do exist but they are not big problems for understanding.
Besides, most people in the north speak Standard Mandarin.

I think changing the language setting only changes how the text is displayed and not how it is
actually encoded in the file. So if the French is scrambled by changing to a Chinese setting, you
should be able to go back.

Finally I made the test with « Chinese » as non-unicode language on my Z22. But indeed it is a
mess with the French specific characters. And as I have much more French than Chinese in my
calendar, memo or address book, I go back to the French (but which means that I will not be able
to synchro Chinese characters on these applications ; never mind ).

Now I just need to buy the machine! I thought I could do it today. Headed for 中关村 “e
城市” commercial centre. As I did not find any Palm in display, I asked to a shop if they knew
a place to find some Palm. The girl told many she had som... asked me to wait… ran away … and
came back 2 minutes later with a TX! I asked to test it but she was enable to switch it on. 2400
yuan for the price. I left for another shop where they had a Treo in display; asked for a TX. Same
process: the guy ran away… and came back with a TX. I immidiately recognised the box - the one I
had just seen in the other shop! Here at least they managed to switch it on and only asked 1900
yuan. I played with it and really enjoyed it, which confirmed my choice to buy a TX. Trouble is
that I would like to buy a "new" one, I mean not a TX which is running around from one sale to
another one.

So where to go ?

For me, two reasons outside those you mention. One, I want to be able to leave my PDA at home
sometimes but still have a phone. A smart phone is too bulky for my liking (although it's been a
couple of years since I last looked, and I might change my mind with my next upgrade) and b) you
can't get a decent camera on a PDA, but you can get a passable one on a phone.

That said, I do find the number of gadgets and wires I carry about in my pocket ridiculous. Maybe
I need one of those new Treos . . . .

I have been using a Treo 680 for the last month. I think it's just about perfect. In terms of
functionality, it's just slightly better than the Treo 650 -- a slightly better camera, I think,
though I haven't used the camera. But it's about 15-20% lighter than the Treo 680. It's not overly
bulky since you can carry it naked (without a carrying case) because the screen doesn't scratch
easily.

But its biggest advantage, for me, over the TX (aside from one less gadget in the pocket) is that
you can use Gmail Mobile to access gmail over your cell phone data connection (GPRS with China
mobile, which is something like RMB10 a month). http://www.google.com/mobile/mail/index.html
Most places in China don't offer WIFI access, but GPRS is available almost anywhere you can use a

I was surprised not to be able even a few online books with a phonetic guide in Zhuyin Fuhao
(BoPoMoFo). Maybe they are all saved as graphics? I've got some books for kids but I'd like to
download something as text, so that I could use electronic dictionaries.

Is Bopomofo dying or is it only used in printed paper and very little online?

I been in Taiwan for over a year now and the only place you see BMPF is in text books and some
buddhist scriptures (specially printed by local buddhist groups here for when they read sutras).
Other than using it to type, it is almost never used in daily life.

As far as online, I can't really be of much help, I never really found anything online of
significant worth.

I don't mean to start another pronunciation system war but... Can I ask why you want to study it?

I did a quick google search and found nothing. Seems there are no bopomofo texts online, and I too
only ever saw it used in children's books and the Guoyu Ribao.
Makes sense though, like pinyin, zhuyin is only a tool, a means to an end, the end being reading
and writing characters. Why would anyone write in zhuyin if they can write characters.

But it's by no means dying, afaik kids are still taught Chinese with it, and it's used in
newspapers and commercials and the like to write words that have no generally accepted characters.

tuxoar: can't speak for other people, but I learned zhuyin because it's the most widely used
system here in Taiwan. The effort of learning it is minimal, and it comes in useful.

I don't disagree, it is widely used in Taiwan and does come in handy occaisionally. I learned it
once I got here. I think the effort I put into learing was worth it. To me it was useful for
dictionaries and the myriad of classical chinese texts that I was burying myself in when furriner
chinese class got too boring. So anyway, good for you taking the time and learning it, makes us
more versatile

Quite right. Books with zhuyin are mostly for children who cannot read all the characters. Only a
tool to help understand the pronuciation.

Buddhist scriptures are characters transliterated from Sanskrit, so they need bpmf the phonetic
system we learn in Taiwan to help read these difficult words.

No need to start wars, Tuxoar. I can afford to learn another system, even if just for the heck of
it. Just because it may come in handy, as it does at the moment. I like the short stories book
(for kids) I borrowed. It's in traditional Chinese and it uses Zhuyin Fuhao. I prefer Hanyu Pinyin
too but I wish to broaden my horizons and learn ㄅㄆㄇㄈ.

i'm learning mandarin from this taiwan site thing (so with traditional characters) and next to
each character is teh BoPoMoFo pronunciation. it kinda helps b/c its not as vague to me as Pinyin
(b/c i'm having issues with pinyin...) but it helps me. i understand how most learners dont' want
to learn it so my suggestion, if you don't need to learn them, dont.

Thanks a lot! No wonder, I couldn't find resources myself - Zhuyin Fuhao 注音符號 /
注音符号 is published as image.

There are also some stories in Chinese with Bopomofo in gif image files with English translations
(also images).

Perhaps, it's too difficult to make vertical scripts on a web site, although, I tried converting a
Word document with Zhuyin Fuhao as ruby (furigana) into an HTML file. The Bopomofo characters
become horizontal in HTML.

Well, Japanese are not too fussed, they use both horizontal (if vertical is not practical or if
the text is mixed with another script) and vertical (more traditional)

See attached screenshots - vertical (from MS Word) and horizontal (converted to HTML):

They could do it in horizontal, if vertical is not feasible. I'd prefer this to image files but,
anyway, the site is great. Not sure if this is true but they say Arabic was only rendered as
images on the web until year 2,000 - there were problems with right-to-left directions.

I don't understand why, in this day and age, the browser giants (Microsoft & Mozilla) and the W3C
haven't made any substantial effort towards making ruby text standard. As it is, people have to
resort to using images, or placing the pronunciation in parentheses after the characters. Both
pretty ugly solutions, especially if one is doing it after every character.

Here's a NPR review of Lust Caution.

If you look at Metacritic (which compiles averages of movie reviews), Lust Caution got mediocre
reviews in most major US newspapers. A lot of reviewers thought the film was a bit boring. I think
the NPR reviewer captured why it was a good movie, and why it was fairly popular in Asia.

I found this cool software at http://www.speakgoodchinese.org/index.html. It will record your
pronunciation and test how good your tones are. Has anyone used it or is anyone willing to try it
and supply some feedback on how well it works (it's free)?

EDIT: I should add that I tried it and liked it but am not sure how good the program is since I am
a real newbie when it comes to Chinese.

I asked a native speaker to try this software. IMHO, given the analysis of her tones, I think this
software can be a great tool for beginners. I learned a lot about what I do wrong, not only
regarding the tone shape itself but also about how I don't keep my pitch smooth, that I have
trouble with two first tones in a row (dropping the second first tone below the first), etc.

I'm still curious about what others think.

Any tips on getting it working? I've installed, but the two programs it adds to my Programs menu
just open DOS boxes (is that the right word?) and then crash or close. There's a lot of info on
compiling stuff on the website, but I was kind of hoping that wasn't intended for us humble
Windows users . . .

I'm not sure why it's not working for you. I am using a PC running Windows and there was no
problem. It does open a DOS window first and then a second or two later opens a second window,
which is the actual program.

For those of you who get it to work, there is an option for male, female, child speaker that you
have to choose from the Voice pulldown menu so that the program takes your pitch range into
account.

EDIT:
This is the version that I installed: http://www.speakgoodchinese.org/rele...gc-install.exe which
is listed under Windows download and installation instructions as Windows (right) icon on the
download page.

Hello all

I'm the lead developer of the tool. Responsible for the Praat integration and crossplatform
compatibility of SGC.

Currently we can say all developers responsible for coding (sgc/praat):
- Don't use Windows
- We are ready to help

While making this program we experienced some very strange problems in relation to praat and
Windows XP. I have created two *totally* different implementations using praat (mentioned the
compatibility update on our site). It became clear different machines responded *totally*
different to the same code. If this was related to the praat program (which runs on virtually all
platforms flawlessly... or is related to my powers to link C code...) was put in the middle.

...but we can help.

First I need to know the error message in the dos box, you can run sgc from the directory it is
installed to. SGC *won't* work if you start it via the .exe(!) if you are not in the same
directory. This is because it uses a .ini and .glade file. This could technically be fixed in very
hard C code... so we decided we fix it using the wrapper file. Image program 'The Gimp' using this
Win32 'where-am-I-installed-fix', so it could be implemented.

So I suggest for the people having problems:

Start > Run > cmd
c:
cd\sgc
sgc

(Report the error messages)

hi,

i love chinese music but am not chinese..however, i've listened to alot of sammi cheng and sandy
lam songs..

i need help to identify a song i need..basically, its a song played in a CD and its right after
the "Coca Cola" Theme song re-mix..played by either Sammi Cheng or Sally Yeh.

Can you help me identify the song right after the coca-cola song? its a very soft song, touching,
and kinda heartbreaking or love song..thanks..i would really appreciate if you gave me a name to

"A CD"? Which CD? You do know that the same song can be included in different CDs, don't you?

According to info on the web there was a 1994 Coca Cola song sung by Sally Yeh. But I have no idea
which song it is that comes right after that Coca Cola song on "a CD".

Perhaps you could post a picture of the cover of the CD or the song names on the CD cover, so that
we could help you better? You can post the picture by pressing this icon , or using the "Attach

i wouldn't remember...yes this Coca Cola song was around 1994 by Sally Yeh..she had a audio tape
when i heard it..it was a white covered audio tape..a silver covered audio tape..do u know any

Do you mean the song is “Always” from Sally Yeh’s album “明月心”.

The OP wants the song that is right after the coca-cola theme song remix ... in a white/silver
covered audio tape.

PS - If the album is 明月心, then the song that comes after "Always" is "落花" (take a look
at the photo of the CD). Perhaps what the OP wants is "落花". Listen to "落花" ->

i do know that song 'coca cola'..i know its 'always'..but that's not the song i need..the song i
need is the song after that..

i'll give you a clue of how the song goes about in that silver audio tape of 1994 with my least
translation skills:

"tam fi na fo yatiee......hi ni na fo yatieeeeeeee..se ne ta fo...hi ni na fo yatieee...se ne..."

as you notice..the main word pronounced in that song is something like "yatieeeeeeee" with it
being stretched..and the beginning of the song has some nice music instruments for 20 secs before
she sings..

secondly, the song is in both sides of the audio tape too! now, do you know the name of that song
of sally yeh?

First of all, neither of the "last two" posts had come up with the song "always". Second of all,
the "2nd last user" who gave you that link had a name...

Visa: Introduction to Chinese visas

There are four types of Chinese visas you are likely to come across. A couple of other types do
exist, but you are unlikely to need to know about them unless you are here long term or work on a
boat.

[top]X or student visa

Used by long-term students (usually more than one semester). Obtained from your local Chinese
embassy or consulate, you will need to provide proof of enrollment at a Chinese university.
Private schools are not usually able to assist you obtain an X visa. Once you have your X visa you
have three months to enter China. Once you enter the country you have thirty days to complete the
residence permit application process which will allow you to leave and enter the country as you
please as long as it is valid.

Under this Visa, the student is not supposed to work. However if the student is a native speaker
there is ample opportunity to teach English and get paid under the table. Many students do this,
and the authorities rarely check up on the students unless they have a reason. However, realize
that working under this visa is illegal[1].

[top]Z or working visa

Obtained from your local Chinese embassy or consulate, you will need to provide an invitation
letter from an approved Chinese employer. Many employers are reluctant to provide this and may ask
you to enter on a tourist or business visa. Once you have your Z visa you have three months to
enter China. Once you enter the country you have thirty daysto complete the residence permit
application process which will allow you to leave and enter the country as you please as long as
it is valid.

[top]F or business visa

Although commonly called a 'business' visa, the F actually stands for 访问 or visit. The F visa
is appropriate for short-term students (one semester or less) (that need to be confirmed as of
01-01-2008!!!!), those visiting for business purposes, visiting scholars, short-term internships
(not exceeding 6 months), etc. It is also commonly used by those working in China who cannot
obtain a Z visa. This is not legal, but often done.

To get an F visa from an overseas embassy or consulate you will need a letter of invitation from a
school or business in China. However, in Hong Kong agencies can arrange, at a cost, F visas of up
to three month duration with no documentation required. For more info, read about Hong Kong F
visas.

For many young westerners this is the visa of Choice. Most Europeans can get a 1 year visas, US
and other countries can be restricted to a 6 month visa. In some of the wealthier cities of
Beijing or Shanghai you may work one month (usually teaching English) and live of the earning for
another 5 months until you need to renew you visa or work again.

If you leave your Z work visa job the company can get the police station to revoke your visa.
However this entails some paperwork and is rarely done. For this reason some foreign workers
prefer the F visa. In addition, companies and schools need authority certification to issue the Z-
visa invitation letters. The criteria for F visa is less, and some schools will ask you to get the
F -visa.

Note: since 01-01-2008 the requirements for F Visa are stiffer. Hong Kong travel agent now give
only up the 3 month with no proof. For longer you need an invitation letter and you will have to
apply through an official channel.

[top]L or tourist visa

No supporting documentation required, but when applying don't mention on the form that you are a
journalist planning to research the plight of ethnic minorities in sensitive border regions.
Duration can range from 30 days to 120 days, and can usually be extended up to two times within
China.

[top]Visa free Entry

Currently, following nationals can enter China without visa for up to 15 days: Brunei, Japan,
Singapore

If you are an APEC region resident you may can apply for an APEC card with a China visa waiver. An
APEC card will give you 3 years visa free entry.

If you have started a large company in China or married a Chinese National, lived in China for 5
years you can apply and get a Chinese Permanent Resident Card. This will allow you to come and
leave the PRC without a visa. You will present the Green Card to Immigration on arrival, you may
need to present your passport as well.

[top]Length of stay restrictions.

Be aware that F and L visas may have length of stay restrictions - ie, you may have a 6-month F
visa with a 60 day stay restriction, meaning you have to leave the country every two months.
Leaving the country can be as simple as crossing the border into Hong Kong and coming right back,
but even this can be expensive and time-consuming if you live in Urumuqi.

[1] Some Nanjing students made this mistake when they took part in a television advertisement for
a School that didn't have the authority to employ westerners. The School was shut down and
students were checked on everyday in the campus and were almost deported.

Gosh that's long, but thanks. Two questions:
Would 这个 be pronounced zhe4 ge, zhei4 ge, or something else.
Is 说 pronounced shuo1 here?

这个 usually is pronounced zhei4ge, 说 in this sentence is shuo1.

Hi, Johnd, "这个叫什么"　actually is more oralised expression, if I met you, you said that
to me, I would say" you speak quite good Chinese". ( not Englese at all)

Chinese is very flexible, so all of these expressions are proper and correct.

In my opinion ...

这个怎么说 is more like "how do you say that?" and the listener will infer that you're
learning Chinese and want to know the correct word.

这个叫什么 is more like "what's that?" and the listener will infer that you've no idea what
you're looking at. Although that might be better translated as 这个是什么

I'm a mandarin learner too, so please someone correct me where apprporiate!

Famous Taiwanese writer Jimmy's name in Chinese character is 幾米. And 機密 (confidential) is
also "Jimi" in pinyin.

I don't mind having something foreign-sounding. The goal is just to have something to call myself
that's not really weird, but I'm open to any ideas. The kanji name that I use for myself in Japan
(理珠慈美/Rishu Jimi) doesn't resemble a Japanese name and it confuses the heck outta people.

I'll have wait for native speakers to say something about this but I often see 汤姆, for Tom,
without any question raised about the 姆 part.

I like the 李 idea but would it make any sense to have 李朱 or 李珠 for my surname? That
would be closer to my actual name. What do you guys think is best of the three choices, 李,
李朱, and 李珠?

Unlike Japanese surnames, Chinese surnames usually have only one character. So either 李 or 朱
would work, but the two combined don't make a Chinese surname as far as I know.
珠 sounds very feminine to me; 吉姆 sounds at least as foreign as 吉米, might as well just
call yourself Jimmy then; 慈美 sounds very Chinese, and if native speaker Skylee says it's ok I
suppose it's not too feminine, and it has the good part of also being your Japanese name, which
means the number of names you have doesn't increase too much, which is always a good thing.

李慈美 is feminine, but I think it is not more feminine than 理珠慈美.

Yeah, I just came across them in a translation about online games - as I understand it it is
possible to play without paying, you just get killed a lot because you haven't got a decent sword
and set of level 74 Orcish armour. No guarantees.

your willingness to help.

I'm not looking for something online, however, for reason other members have mentioned.

I've asked this question at a lot of places on the web and have googled numerous times, without
any results.

It's fairly easy to find free, downloadable RPG games in English, I assumed it would be the same
for Chinese games.

I think a link to a website which collects such games would be useful and helpful.

Either that or something to copy/paste in Baidu (or some other search engine) to get relevant
results.

Another game I would recommend is that 风云1天下会(1997) you posted in in your first post.

The 轩辕剑 franchise is pretty popular too, but not as good as the other ones imo. I haven't

Hmmm... Interesting thread. I'm actually planning to start playing some games I bought in Chinese
as soon as I can get a new PDA, for the purpose of helping my Chinese (Jagged Alliance Two, I
think, and Civilization 3 are the only two that work on my laptop). I mostly bought them for that,
and because they were disgustingly cheap (10RMB!). I'm fairly sure they're legit, so I guess they
might be expensive compared to 水货 stuff.

I was actually hoping this might be about Pen and Paper RPGs in China(Chinese), but I guess not.

So I'm going to derail this thread and ask about P&P RPGs: Does anyone know if this concept exists
in China? Are there any Chinese ones? For reference, I'm talking about stuff like D&D,
Exalted, Vampire: the Reqiuem (and Masquerade, which has been discontinued), other games in that
line, Shadowrun (NOT the video game), etc. See DriveThruRPG to purchase PDFs.

I'm curious. Also, does anyone else on these boards play P&P RPGs?

Like Space Quest? which reminds me of MUDs. There used to be a lot of Chinese MUDs, textual
multiplayer RPGs that were very popular back in the 90s.

I think the main thing was the army-green bag with a big red star on it. I'm sure most Peruvians
can't read Chinese either, but they sure recognized that symbol. Cameron Diaz can claim ignorance
because the bag has characters that she couldn't read.

podcasts (my level) and they're fantastic. I like the reading in 3 speeds and especially the
vocabulary practice with the measure words for each noun... Very helpful site!

Is anyone doing it this summer/fall or next spring? I know it's run by a bunch of ex- IUP
teachers, promises low student-teacher ratio, and the ability to specialize in Chinese (political,
cultural, business etc.). I'm thinking of doing it in the spring or summer of 2008 which seems far
away, but I've got to plan my budget accordingly.

I know it's been mentioned on this board a few times but only in a speculative sense.

If anyone is planning on doing it, please shoot me a pm.

is the BLI you're referring to the same as BLCU?

according to the BLCU website it used to be called Beijing Language Institute.

if it's the same one, there's a bit of info in the sticky in this subforum. I'm also interested,
as someone in another post suggested IUP has gone downhill and that BLI is better now.

Can anybody confirm or deny that BLI and BLCU are referring to the same institution?

I think it might have been called "Beijing Language Institute" when the threads were first posted,
but it seems that they've changed their name. Maybe because of the confusion with
北京语言学院 (which was BLCU's original name before it became 北京语言大学).

I'm currently at Boomerang Language Institute and I have to say its one of the hardest things I've
ever done. Four hours a day is killer, but its nice because although they charge by the hour, the
teachers generally will keep you after or come chat with you in their free time.

Hi,

I'm on a Mac and am a total newbie to this great program. So far, I've run into a few problems
inputting words directly in the program using IME Mode:

1) "~ian". For example, "jian" doesn't come up with any words except "Ji'an". I noticed it
happened with Bian, Dian, & Tian. However, "Lian" and "Mian" work fine.

2) "jue" also gives me a weird phrase that seems to break up the pinyin into "ju4 e2"

3) Probably some other ones, but once I ran into these, I started getting a little frustrated
inputting my list.

Are there some special rules for inputting using the IME that I don't know about? Or a workaround?
I'd appreciate any help! Thanks!!

The default IME input on the Mac is terrible. Try installing something like QIM instead.

Hi.. I am a 16-year old girl in the intermediate stages of learning Mandarin. I really want to
listen to/watch online radio/shows/podcasts etc, but everything that I can find seems too
adult-oriented. I will go crazy if I just have to hear about politics, foriegn affairs, etc. I
want something more teen-oriented. Any ideas?

Give Yinhe Tai 银河台 (Milky Way Radio) a try-- this is an online-only aimed at teens and
focuses on popular music and culture, fashion, etc. Also featured are serialized book selections
(Pianpian Ai Du Shu 偏偏爱读书) and ghost stories/ tales of the supernatural.(Yinhe Meiying
银河影 and Yinhe Jinghun 银河惊魂).

Programs are achived for about a week here: http://www.radio.cn/yhtdb/ which makes for easy repeat
listening/downloading, etc. If you search around a bit, you can usually find an online version of
the book being read, which I did recently for the book "她死在QQ上" (roughly "She Died While
Instant Messaging"). That gives an idea of the type of stuff they do...some of the stories tend to
be on the pulpy side, but for me that just makes them all the more fun.

Hey, I think it would be a little bit hard to find Chinese learning sources only for teens, but we
can also avoid those boring topics.

Try www.chinesepod.com, www.ezychinese.com, www.adsotrans.com.
They have various and interesting podcasts/ video shows there.

I was into politics and foreign affairs when I was a teenager -- plus video games and sports.

A young girl (25) of Cantonese mother tongue I know finds for example movies at youtube, and songs
(don't know where on the Internet) and identifies and translates the Putonghua song lyrics into
Swedish (and/or English?) using dictionaries and the Wenlin software (no, I don't get a
commission, but I think it' great). She loves it, and I think it must be as fun a useful.

I though of another online station, INET Radio, which is part of CRI. Beyond the popular music
they play, they also cover topical issues in a teen-friendly way. One of my favorite programs is
鲜唱片 Xiān Chàngpiàn ("Fresh Records") that is a series of features and artist interviews
in a 30-minute format. You get a little bio of the artist, a few songs, and sometimes even an
interview. They also have an archive, so sampling what's out there is made very, very easy.

中文新手 -

Hello. I've attached a copy of 4 Chinese handwritten characters that I'm not able to read. I do OK
with standard font style 汉字 but handwritten characters still throw me for a loop. I think the
first character is 丁 but I wouldn't take that to the bank. Thanks for your help.

Hello everybody,
I'm thinking of learning Chinese during the spring semester next year. However, I'd prefer to
learn quickly how to speak Chinese rather than to learn how to write or read it. Do u know some
universities or institutions in Beijing where I can learn Chinese in pinyin? (because universities
usually give speaking "and" reading lessons)

I have heard peple talking about getting some service voice over internet thingy (Isn't that what
these things are called?) like Skype and then randomly meeting friends from different places. You
could try that. One of my students plays weiqi online and chats with Chinese friends over that,
and another met her czech friend using Skype and chats with her in German and English.

Xiao Kui -

The 1 month Chinese school teaches reading but not writing, so not completely what you're looking
for, but halfway there. Also they use Chinese Made Easier, a textbook that slowly eases in
characters to get you used to them, and gradually phases out the pinyin only after you've been
exposed to a character 10 times. There are some threads and posts abt this school in Chinese
forums, and I think member self-taught mba is one of the people who runs the school, so you might
want to PM him for more info.

BTW, i think it would be difficult to teach completely in pinyin because one pinyin can stand for
30+ different characters/words in some cases.

Of course you can learn completely in pinyin, but I don't think the best courses would be taught
that way, maybe a short week-long crash course for travelers or sth like that.

And in addition to what Xiao Kui said, only learning pinyin will drastically limit your ability to
read and understand intermediate + textbooks.

The New Practical Chinese Reader, for example, phases out pinyin after the very first volume (6 in
total) except when defining vocabulary. From the second volume on, all exercises and reading are
in characters only. Also, the first volume only introduces around 400 - 450 words. So, at least
with this series of textbook (which I swear by) you still need to learn characters in order to
progress.

In my experience, most good textbooks are like this. So, you may want to invest time into reading
characters if you'd like to get past the Elementary level (without having everything broken down
and explained in pinyin by a third party).

Seems you have set your mind already to "characters are impossible to learn". I made that error
too. If you look a little closer at character you will see that it's not THAT difficult. You can
learn a few 100 in a month easily.

In fact, I wonder about people that study Chinese full time in China and manage to learn just 1000
in a year.

I believe that reading and writing are quite different tasks. Just reading will be fine. Nowadays
we use computer and writing becomes MUCH easier. I can now even can figure out how to do the
chinese input on my cell phone, just by learning about stroke orders for 5 Minutes.

Learning characters will actually INCREASE your learning speed. Because words "stick" better in
the brain. Also, soon you can read other simple stuff then just dead boring learning material

I think for maximum speed you should learn by yourself, a school will just slow you down and let
you go through lots of BS you don't need or want.

The Bridge School are very proud of the fact that they place more emphasis on speaking than
reading. That said, there is still some reading. No mention of writing though.

Is that 1monthmandarin or 1on1mandarin you're thinking of? 1on1mandarin definitely use Chinese
Made Easier, 1monthmandarin might, but I haven't seen them say specifically that they do.

Anyway, your best bet is, as you've figured out, probably to avoid a university, as they tend to
have a bit of an 'of course you shall learn characters. Just because you are the customer doesn't
mean you can choose what you pay for' mentality. Look at the private schools like the two
mentioned above, Diqiucun (pick and choose your courses and you could be doing oral Chinese from
morning till night), maybe consider working with a tutor.

We don't have to know Chinese characters in our conversational class here in Melbourne, all
examples, texts and dialogues have both characters and pinyin. If you have both you have a choice.
If you want to learn characters, you can and it's easy, because you don't have tolook them up
(time consuming) and you can always check yourself by covering the pinyin.

IMHO, you learn to speak faster, if you have a lot of material that gives you both pinyin and
characters.

Also, "Teach Yourself Beginner's Chinese" has excellent audio, good pace of learning. The big
drawback is it doesn't have characters but you, Arkilok, are not interested in them, anyway.

Eventually, you will have to learn characters as won't be able to go beyond basics.

Presently, I'm told that the internet speed I can get is 1.5 megs. (I think) I'm not sure of the
speed rate but it seems incredibly slow compared to the service I got back in the U.S.(which was
ethernet speed of 15 megs)
Is there any way to get faster download speeds? Why is it so very slow here? Surely, China has the
technology for faster internet speeds. What's the deal?
I wanted to download some music from iTunes, but one 4 minute song might take two days to download
with this bogged down internet system. I don't want to tie up my computer that long. Any
suggestions or information?

Whereabouts are you, and what ISP are you on? How do domestic sites compare? If you can compare
with people in other cities / using different ISPs / next door you might be able to figure out
where the problem is.

I've had consistently good service with Beijing Netcom, bar the Taiwan earthquake - international
stuff is noticeably slower, but still entirely usable, domestic sites almost instant (if you allow
for the 2MB of HTML and flash animations). Can't remember what the fastest download I've had is -
120kB/s or 170kB/s, one of the two.

Howdy Roddy, I'm in Chengdu and the internet service provider is the local telecommunications
company. They provide phone service as well. I did a speed test for downloads. It seems I'm
getting about 70 kbps. Painfully .....s....l.....o....w..... !
I guess I'll just have to suffer with it. Nothing much I can do short of moving to another city.
And I'm not much in favor of that. Perhaps, I can trade MP3's with local expats.

If you used a speed testing server in another country, you will be running into the problem with
slow links to places outside of China. I don't get any more than about 35KB/sec for International
traffic, but I get up to 120KB/sec (almost 1Mb) downloading from sites within China.

Also, your provider may limit traffic using certain protocols, such as bittorrent. That is the
case with China Telecom in Hainan, for example. You could see if the speed problems apply to other
protocols, since it might not have anything to do with your actual connection speed.

If you have problems with the speed using sites within China, you might want to contact the phone
company and ask them why it is that slow.

Thanks for the hints and info. Just one more question if I can.
It seems I can't download from iTunes anyhow. They won't let me do it from China. (yes, I
understand why) Can you give me a competant web site in China where I can download music from. I
want to access typical american rock, and pop tunes. Would also love to get access to some British
greats like Emerson,Lake, and Palmer. How about some info on this?

against EMI, Sony BMG, Warner Music and Universal Music over links to illegal music downloads.

Those speeds aren't right, certainly not if you are paying for an ADSL service, and I'd still be
inclined to see what speeds other people are getting and take it up with the ISP.

On downloading - there are existing links in the music forum. mp3.baidu.com is the classic, but
with deals being signed between record companies and the portals there are an increasing number of
online options. Try Sina's Music Box for example - haven't tried it myself, just had to translate
a press release about it this morning.

I live in Chengdu, have China Telecom internet (1.5mbps, 120元/月) and my download speed is
capped at 150k/s. I've requested the fastest internet they reasonably have and have been told that
I have yet.

I just returned from Chongqing where I noticed my friend downloading torrents at over 1mb/s, and
he told me he pays 90元/月 for whatever his girlfriend signed him up for. I can't believe the
speed varies that much between two cities in such close geographic proximity. I had China Telecom
internet before and could download at higher speeds, but they refused my request for a public IP
address.

Yeah Roddy, I'm on the exact same rate and system that Prodigal Son wrote about. It's 120 yuan for
the 1.5 service. I have a monitoring system for download speeds. The speeds I'm getting vary from
50-80 kb/s. Woefully inept. This may be because of several factors. The wiring in my building may
be a long run without a signal amp.(I'm 9 floor up) Or it could be antiquated wiring in the
building. And a few other technical reasons.
After talking to the company technician, who shrugged in the same non-commital way as everyone
else, I guess I'm stuck with what I'm paying for. At least for right now anyway. I'm presently
looking for another apartment in Chengdu. Hopefully, I can find a "no dogs allowed" apartment
complex with better internet speeds. If any exist. Thanks for the cross thread. It confirmed my
thoughts on the matter.

Hi:

using Traditional Chinese "Hanin / ZhuYin Standard" input method on a German
MacBook with German Keyboard I encounter the following problems:

1. German Z = wrong Zhuyin ㄈ .... should be Zhuyin ㄗ = US: Y
2. German Y = wrong Zhuyin ㄗ .... should be Zhuyin ㄈ = US: Z
3. German - = wrong Zhuyin ㄦ .... should be Zhuyin ㄥ = US: /

The first two are not a big problem, but the third hinders me from
typing "Zhuyin ㄥ", which make this input method crippled and unusable.

E.g. I am unable to type "ㄆㄧㄥ" (Pinyin "ping"), because typing it
results in: "ㄆㄧㄦ" which is nonsense.

Even a taiwanese pc usb keyboard is of no help - the same wrong
result.

Any hints how to solve this??
I am quite disappointed about my Mac as I expected better software
quality from Apple.

I use a German keyboard with American keyboard mapping, too. You can get the '-' by pressing the
'ß' key. If you do your standard writing with the American keyboard layout as well, you will get
used to the few differences very soon!

Hi there can anyone give me information for applying to BNU?? I have been on the site - but the
site doesnt seem to be working well, and I can find any information for foreign students! I',m
plaaning to apply for the academic year for fall 2007, would i just need to apply directly or is
it better through agencies?? Is it too late to start applying now?

Also would there be any pick up services at the airport?? - I'm confused where to start off can
anyone plase advise me?

I was thinking of applying to BLCU before but I heard that there were too many foreigners . I'm
looking for somewhere where there are less foreigners to encourage myself to speak mandarin!

Apply direct, not through an agency. It's not too late; the deadline will close some time in June.
I think. The sooner the better though.

They'll pick you up from the airport provided you arrive during the days that they offer this
service. Arrange that online (along with accommodation if you require it) once you've applied
successfully and been given a registration ID.

BNU has less foreigners than BLCU, but how much Mandarin you'll speak still comes down to your own
willpower.

Apply direct on their website. It can be a bit crap and slow, but so are all the other web sites
in China, to be honest.

My question is only partly relevant to this thread.

As I suggested to elina I always use NeoAudio to convert CD tracks to mp3 format. But I am in love
with Baidu and had not had a new CD for quite a while. Recently, however, I've bought myself a
double-CD set on some classical music (it is actually the OST of nodame cantabile) and ripping the
CD tracks using NeoAudio proved to be a failure. Glitch, glitch. Because I've read about using WMP
on this thread, I tried WMP too, which behaved strangely by turing the tracks first to WAV and
then automatically creating MP3 versions. But it was no good as there are still glitches
throughout (do you call them glitches, those slight jumpings). And they are unbearable in
classical music.

So I've searched on-line and found this tool -> Exact Audio Copy. With the auto-correction
function, it works. But very very painfully slowly. (There must be something wrong with the CDs as
even if I tried to manually remove some errors, some seem not removable.) And I have to first turn
the CD tracks to WAV (very large files), then use another programme to turn them to MP3.

So my question is - are there better alternatives to deal with this problem?

Both windows media player and realplayer should rip CD fine. Make sure you have the latest version.

No good at all. I can't hear anything wrong when I play the CDs, but, whatever programmes I used
to rip the tracks, the MP3 versions are not acceptable. Probably it is the CDs that cause the
problems.

Could be copy-protection? Do they play fine on the computer? I assume so, since you haven't
mentioned otherwise.

Yes, they played fine on the computer and in CD player. And it turned out that Exact Audio Copy
could not overcome the problem. It could be copy protection.

But I've had it sorted out now.

i sugges Itunes! A lot of people use it anyway because it's great for organising MP3's (and every
man and his dog has an ipod).

Put a cd in and a rip button will appear somewhere (top right if im not mistaken). Just make sure
you set in your preferences to rip it to MP3 instead of the default AAC format.

It will rip into your itunes music folder which is also set in the preferences.

For all you German speaking Chinese learners, I'd like to announce the release of the HanDeDict
ZDT plugin. HanDeDict is a freely available Chinese-German dictionary in EDICT format. The plugin
is based on the Jan 27, 2007 version of the dictionary. You can download the plugin from here.

To install, just copy the downloaded jar file into your ZDT_INSTALL_DIR/plugins directory. You
will then have the option to select ‘handedict’ as your current dictionary.

If anyone knows of any other dictionaries they'd like me to add, please let me know.

HanDeDict dictionary plugin works also fine with me (Mac OS X).

The only thing I dont like: the translation popup tooltips in the annotator appear after about 2
seconds. This is too slow...

Actually I've found the problem and it's not OS related or anything at all. Unfortunately you
can't currently have both the Adso and Handedict dictionary plugins running at the same time
because an out of memory exception occurs. Oops.

I'm currently working on a fix.

I've updated the adso and handedict dictionary plugins to version 0.1.1. If you would like to be
able to use the adso and handedict dictionaries (or other future dictionaries) together, then you
should download the latest versions. Otherwise, don't worry about it.

Sorry, but this is still broken; searching using adso or handedict gave me this error (while
searching cedict does work). This is very mysterious: I had installed the new adso and handedict
plugins and they worked flawlessly for two days, but today they appear to be broken again; the
difference now is that both adso and handedict produce this error, while previously it was only
handedict:

Where did the business and technology forum go? It was one of my favorites.

I found bhchao's "when did you lose your virginity" poll still attracts a lot of attetions, which

search for all topics I participated, so that I could see whether anyone replied my posts.

Is it easy for you to make one? I think you've done a lot of modifications on the system.

It's always been there. Try this link - which you can find either by clicking on your name to the
left, or on your profile. You can also get weekly, daily or instant notification of topics you are
involved / interested in via subscriptions - Quick Links in the header, then Subscribed Threads.

Actually, if you just want a topic listing of stuff you've posted in, with most recently replied
stuff at the top, go to the Search page, search by username (right hand side) for Outofin, make
sure 'Show Results as Threads' is selected at bottom left, and that should be what you want.
However, using the Subscriptions system is the best way to do it - see here for instructions. I
wrote that a couple of years ago, but should still work.

not trying to defend chinesepod or anything, but they do a good job in that they make the lessons
entertaining and unless you expect your level to go sky-high after a few lessons they provide good
material also. Now, what use is exclusively native content to me if I am a newbie? I did their
100+ newbie lessons, and their 90 elementary lessons. I am glad they have explanations in english
in those, otherwise I'd have a much harder time understanding the lessons and they wouldn't be so
fun. I just got to their intermediate level recently, and now they have a lot of explanations in
chinese. sometimes I feel it's pretty hard but it's good since it allows me to tune into the
native speaker flow of the language, Jenny doesn't try to slow down or anything. So if you need
everything native, it's there, just wait or skip lower levels if you're up to it and it's there.
Of course, chinesepod is not the only course I listen to, just wanted to make a point that you
sometimes need explanations in the language you can understand.

I thought at intermediate, high intermediate, and advanced CPOD is mostly or all in Chinese?

Not sure, I just started on intermediate, it's kinda difficult for me, so I am happy they still
provide some english comments. Upper intermediate and advanced should be no problem purely in
chinese.

obviously you cant just jump right into full chinese audio from the beginning. steve even said in
one of his interviews that you may listen and listen to something but if it is not your level you
simply wont understand it and will get nothing out of it. and later said on this forum that we
learn from what we know- having things explained in our own language. so i think having english on
chinese-pod is important in the beginning. and they do speak more chinese the more you progress
with it.

i think everyone is just taking this no-grammar no-english attitude to the extreme. you simply
cant do that especially in the beginning stages of learning. you need grammar and you need
english. steve has said both of these. grammar is always there and never ignored. just not focused
upon as the main point in study. and we learn from what we know....

later on though, you can start to drop the english dependancy as your vocabulary increases. but
grammar is always there in the background.

I think CPod is great for beginners. But one need a 2nd or 3rd source of input. At least, CPod
should also do some low entry Mandarin only stories.

intermediate is still high in English. Upper are just too complicated. You can still have 100%
Mandarin contend which is not difficult, even for beginners.

Yesterday I listened a little to Antiwave.net , they seem to have interesting topics, but no
script. So I get only get only 30%

Is there anything out there which is interesting, and WITH (Chinese) script? I don't need English
translations.

I have only been listening to their advanced lessons, and even there, I felt that it was still a
long way from what you hear on the street. I had little trouble following Chinesepod's advanced
lessons, but do encounter problems in many parts of normal life, e.g. listening to the news,
talking to a taxi driver with a heavy Beijing accent and so on. So if you want to get a good idea
about spoken Chinese, do follow flameproof's advice and get more sources of input.

Maybe here is a good suggestion for CPod users:

Get an MP3 Editior
Cut out everything and keep just one storyline.

That brings the 10 Minute lessons down to one Minute or less. That's a good length to repeat 50
times. If you don't get it you can still listen to original with the English once in a while.

I think it's no problem if you don't understand much, after some time it will start to make sense
through context.

What is the subject matter of the sculpture?

You could consider 不讓鬚眉 (bu rang xu mei) if you want to express that women are as strong
and as good as the other sex.

BTW, I have not read any of the books of the two names you quoted.

However, she does have quite a following today, thanks to her controversial blog (NSFW if your

Simply I look for women writers who express themselves with freedom of which they feel. I would
like to put short phrases in Chinese-English (or Japanese-English, or Korean-English). You can
write to me? some phrase of Chinese or Japanese or koreanas writers for a sculpture?

That sculpture will have phrases of women writers of many countries

Hello,

At first a big thankyou to the developer - With ZDT I've finally found an excellent software for
learning the Chinese language.
I'm a German using ZDT 0.6.1 with Ubuntu 6.06 (Linux).
When I learn in the flashcard mode and want to type in special characters like ü in "nü3", the
software claims that the answer is wrong.

How can type in them "correctly"?

Hi,

I guess you could input vinstead of ü when using ZDT, just like you do in Wenlin. Thus, when you
want to type nü3, I guess you can simply write nv3. Try!

Hmmm..you didn't tell us how you do it, but I usually ü is substituted by v, so for nü, just
type N + V and that should do it

Actually, it follows the Cedict convention which represents the umlaut with a u followed by a
colon. So for your example, you'd type "nu:3".

Hi, just wanted to know how your suppose to enter ǚ in zdt. I've tried entering nu3 and nv3 for
the female character (女), but neither seem to work.

Hello,

I would like to configure the "Auto update" feature of ZDT, but I couldn't find how to do it.
On the ZDT FAQ website, there is a link that is supposed to bring me to the step-by-step
instructions to set the auto update mechanism, but this link is bringing me to the main site. (
See: http://zdt.sourceforge.net/update.html ). Maybe this link is wrong, can anybody check it?

My ZDT is on version 0.6.0, and I want to update to the 0.6.1. That's why I wanna configure the
Auto update mechanism.

Hi cvkai,

I haven't created an update build for the ZDT since version 0.5.0 due to lack of interest. Since I
took it out (~5 months ago) you're the first one to mention that you miss it. =) Anyway, unless
more people yell at me to include it, it probably won't be back as it saves me a few steps in my
build process. I should probably update the website though to reflect that it's no longer a valid
option.

Ok, no problem! It is not that necessary.
I though that the link of the website was wrong by "accident", and maybe somebody else was also
trying to use the auto update mechanism.
But, it seems that nobody here is interested.

By the way, the ZDT is really helping me on my studies, specially that Flashcard feature.
